Parent, Guardian, or Caregiver
If you would like to support a job seeker with disabilities as a family member or friend, it’s important to ensure the individual is in complete agreement with receiving your assistance with their career journey and the formation of an Integrated Resource Team (IRT). The IRT will only be successful if the job seeker leads the process, so part of your role is to support them in becoming the best leader that they can be.
Getting Started
- Have a conversation with the job seeker with disabilities in your life to ensure they are ready to embark on their career journey. The IRT works best when the youth is leading the process.
- Inquire as to whether any other school professionals that support the youth would like to participate, such as a teacher, counselor, paraprofessional, or occupational/speech therapist.
- To help kickstart the process, find an American Job Center through the New York State Department of Labor.
- Leverage the resources and tools below, which were designed to support parents of youth with disabilities.
