Career Exploration


The first step of your career journey starts by exploring different jobs and industries that interest you. The goal of this stage is to create a clear employment goal . This is when you explain the desired result for your career and create a plan to find the job you want. It's okay if you don't have a goal yet or if it changes over time. Using the resources below, your Disability Resource Coordinator (DRC) or counselor can help you find a career that interests you.

 


Getting Started

  1. Download the Career Exploration Worksheet. Record your notes here and this will help you make progress.
  2. Visit an American Job Center or Career Center to meet with a DRC or career counselor who can provide support on the next step.
  3. Complete some of the assessments using the links below. An assessment asks many questions about your interests and skills to help suggest a career path for you.
  4. Visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook to look up careers that interest you. Learn how much people earn, what education or skills are required, and how fast the job market is growing.
  5. Use this information to create an employment goal using our Employment Goal Setting tool. This will help guide you and anyone who is supporting you along your career journey.
  6. Read though the information on the Financial Resources and Public Benefits section of our website and complete the About My Money Worksheet. This will help you manage your money and set financial goals.

Work Values

Values are things you do because you believe they are important and meaningful. Work values are common beliefs and behaviors about how to be successful. If you focus on the values below, you are sure to make progress along your career.


  1. Attendance – Attendance is being present at your job. Don’t miss work unless you absolutely have to.
  2. Punctuality – Punctuality is arriving on time. Remember to show up early to every appointment. This shows your commitment.
  3. Appearance – Appearance is about having the right clothing for the work environment. For example, does the job require a uniform? Professional dress? Or does it just require work boots and warm clothing? Look the part and dress for success.
  4. Attitude – Attitude is a way of thinking about work. Do your best to have a positive attitude in the workplace.
  5. Productivity – Productivity is how much work you can do within a certain amount of time. The more work you can do in a short amount of time, the more productive you are. Complete your tasks and request support as needed.
  6. Professional Development – Professional Development is going to school or training so that you can do better at your job and beyond. Keep learning!
